The League’s attempt to approve its amendment on seaside resorts to the cohesion decree failed. The proposal was intended to urge the government to complete the mapping of maritime state property and to take into account the commercial value of seaside businesses, but Fratelli d’Italia opposed it. The Quirinale had also intervened on the topic, having asked for the amendment to be withdrawn because it had deemed it irrelevant to the object of the decree. Matteo Salvini’s party pushed for it to pass anyway, while Giorgia Meloni’s party preferred to postpone the issue in an ad hoc decree. In the end the second line prevailed, and the amendment was transformed into a simple agenda. Forza Italia was the mediator for the approval, while the European Affairs Minister Raffaele Fitto was among the main opponents.
The change of course was announced by the leader of the League in the Senate Massimiliano Romeo, who is also the first signatory of the amendment: «After the broad reassurances received from Palazzo Chigi to address the topic in one of the next councils of ministers, we have decided to transform the amendment on seaside resorts into an agenda to commit the government to adopting a mapping and defining a reorganization process for the sector, guaranteeing an economic return and protecting business activities, also through the recognition of compensation based on the value corporate and a pre-emption system”.
The League’s insistence on the amendment was read as a challenge to the Meloni government, which promised so much but did nothing to safeguard the sector. The beach concessions will expire on December 31st based on law 118/2022 of the Draghi government and a rule on compensation is seen as a good parachute by sector operators, in view of the inevitable tenders. But in the absence of national regulations, the Municipalities are proceeding in no particular order with the tenders, creating disparities and disputes that only government intervention can resolve. The fact that Romeo has made known his intentions to intervene in one of the next councils of ministers means that a solution is really close.
