Flood, this morning the inspection of the National Civil Protection Department on the Stregale torrent

This morning, 13 June, an important inspection was carried out by the technicians of the national and regional civil protection department in Montemurlo to take stock of the progress of the works on the graved section of the Stregale stream and more generally to carry out a survey of the post-interventions flood in the area. Also present at the inspection were the mayor Simone Calamai and those responsible for the municipal civil protection. The safety intervention of the Stregale torrent is proceeding quickly and has entered the second phase with the insertion of the “sock” in the stretch that goes from via Fratelli Cervi, passing through via Montalese to via Bologna. In recent weeks the works had affected the northern part of via Fratelli Cervi. The crossing of Via Montalese, to insert the stocking, in recent days has required the establishment of an alternating one-way system regulated by traffic lights on Via Montalese itself, a few steps from the town hall.

«We are now in the final stages of the works for the complete safety of the Stregale stream which crosses part of the town of Montemurlo. This is an intervention worth around 1 million euros which will bring the entire area hit by the flood of November 2nd back to complete safety – explains the mayor Simone Calamai – In recent days the traffic in the center has slowed down because the work on the insertion of the reinforcement sock of the pipe, through which the stream flows, has reached a crucial stage which has required the establishment of the alternating one-way system. I am sure of the understanding of our citizens who want a return to normality as soon as possible.” During the excavation works on the Via Montalese, the arch of the old Novello bridge also resurfaced, which was closed and covered during the 1960s to make way for the new road. A piece of the old Montemurlo that no longer exists and resurfaced during the works. Mayor Simone Calamai, during the inspection of the Stregale torrent with the National Civil Protection Department, reiterated the need for financial coverage to arrive as soon as possible for the urgent sums activated by the Municipality for the safety of the post-flood territory: « In Montemurlo there are 24 emergency sums activated for a value of approximately 10 million euros – concludes Calamai – It is important that the state funds to cover the emergency sums arrive as soon as possible. With the national and regional Department I also addressed the issue of the need for an environmental mitigation plan to be created at a national level that can improve the territory’s response to extraordinary events such as the flood of 2 November last. The Municipality of Montemurlo has already envisaged environmental mitigation interventions on its territory for over 40 million euros, without counting the emergency sums. The national environmental mitigation plan is essential to have projects that can be built immediately, can be implemented and fully achievable”

The sock is a sort of reinforcement to the original concrete pipe, which gave way in various points during the flood, causing the flooding of various areas. The operations have been going on for many months and were carried out by a specialized company from Forlì, hired by the Municipality to carry out the intervention which requires particular skills. After cleaning the graved section from the debris brought downstream by the stream, in recent weeks the insertion of the metal sock began, a new pipe that allows the water to flow but also to waterproof and reduce the roughness through a resin patina (roughness is a property of the surfaces of the pipelines, given by the ratio of the roughness of the surface and the diameter of the pipeline ed.).
