My beach, how much do you cost me? The new (increased) prices of umbrellas and deckchairs in Palermo

Summer is now upon us and like every year a search for Consumer Federation wanted to ascertain whether the prices of the equipped areas on Italian beaches have remained the same. In Sicily the prices of seaside services are increasing, but the equipped beaches on the island remain the cheapest in Italy.

In our region the prices were recorded on the beaches of Palermo, Catania and Trapani. Compared to last year, almost all services have increased. In Palermo an umbrella costs 8 euros per day (in 2023 the average regional price was 6 euros); a deckchair 5 euros (5.33 euros in 2023); a sunbed 8.5 euros (6.5 euros in 2023).

The daily pass now stands at 25.50 euros (compared to 23 euros in 2023). The monthly subscription costs 398 euros (381.33 euros in 2023); the annual subscription is 986 euros (compared to the regional average of 945.33 euros last year). A pedalo costs 8 euros (in 2023 the average price in Sicily was 7.33 euros).

Federconsumatori, however, launches theprice increase alarm: “Already last year – he recalls – we were worried about rising prices. QThis year we can only be even more worried.” Hence the request for mapping of the Sicilian coasts “in order to establish the number and extent of the concessions to be put up for tender. This year – continues La Rosa – all the concessions already in place last year have been extended to 31 December and over 6 thousand requests for new concessions for tourist facilities on the beaches are pending at the regional maritime state property”.

Federconsumatori fears “that as a counterbalance to the paid beach, which costs more and more, there will be fewer and fewer free beaches for Sicilian families. It would be very serious, because it is true that Sicily is a region with a very strong tourist vocation, but it is also true that it is inhabited by 5 million Sicilians who have the right to go to the seaside without spending a fortune”.
