MotoGP prototypes can achieve amazing performances. This is how long the engines of a premier class racing car last.
The challenges of the MotoGP riders have enlivened thousands of boring Sundays. We Italians have always been lucky enough to be able to boast extraordinary interpreters of two wheels. Since its inception, Italian motorcycling has showcased top-class Italian riders and manufacturers. It is not a case that the riders with the most titles are Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi.
The centaur from Tavullia was the only one in the history of two wheels to have triumphed in all the classes he took part in. He won in 125, 250, 500 and in MotoGP 1000 cc, managing to bring Aprilia, Honda and Yamaha to the top of the world. He also tried to win on three different bikes, retracing the exploits of historic champions of the past, but he failed to achieve glory on the Ducati. Today the top class can boast another extraordinary championraised in the VR46 Academy, or Pecco Bagnaia.
The Turin native broke the Stoner taboo, managing to deservedly triumph against Quartararo in 2023 and Martin in 2024. Pecco took advantage of having arrived on the best Desmosedici ever. An Italian rider on an Italian motorcycle hadn’t won for 50 yearsright from the time of Agostini on MV Agusta. Next season Nuvola Rossa will have to deal with Marc Marquez in the factory team. The technical level on the GP25s will certainly rise even further.
The reliability of MotoGP engines
The engines of today’s MotoGP have become much more reliable than those of the past. They were subject to continuous breakdowns due to unregulated extremization. The development of technologies has led to the birth, just like in Formula E, of extraordinary technical solutions on an engineering level. The top class prototypes have made progressin terms of developments, also thanks to aerodynamics and lightweight elements.
Today they can cover about 2 thousand km, an extraordinary figure, which means that, barring technical problems, which can cover a large part of the championship. In MotoGP there has been commendable work done to understand the engines, which have gradually become more and more reliable. A total revolution will arrive in 2027 with new rules that will determine the transition to 850cc engines. It will be an important test for manufacturers who will have to start from scratch with new engines.
