W15 ‘racing’ in Montreal
“The Mercedes was the best car on the track“. Max Verstappen had no hesitation in indicating that the W15 in Canada was the car with the most potential. George Russell certainly didn’t ‘mystify’ the Dutchman’s thesis on the radio given that he defined his race “horrible” probably aware of having thrown a great opportunity to obtain the second victory in F1 after the one arrived in Brazil in 2022.
Christian Horner, who responded piquedly to James Allison on the fact that Red Bull beat the Mercedes updates despite the ‘downgrade’ of the RB20, underlined that the next three races will be indicative to evaluate whether Mercedes’ growth is real or linked exclusively to the particularity of the Montreal circuit. The Red Bull team principal also highlighted the fact that the Milton Keynes team managed to bring home two victories in three difficult race weekends for the Anglo-Austrian team: “We know what our car stiffness problems are when it is necessary to climb the curbs and winning in Canada after what happened in Monaco is a good sign. We won two races out of three when we were in difficulty and I hope we can maintain this level to confirm ourselves in the next races too. Competition has grown tremendously, we must not be fooled by the fact that we have won six out of nine games. To stay at the top we must offer the best version of ourselves.”
Even Max Verstappen on the eve of Canada had underlined that Monaco “he had given a wake-up call” to Red Bull, which is now expected to show its full potential Barcelona where in 2023 it dominated unchallenged. Montmelò will be a key weekend especially for Red Bull’s rivals to understand if there can actually be a ‘match’ already in 2024 without having to postpone the showdown to 2025 before the arrival of the new rules and new power units in 2026 .
