Leonardo-Rheinmetall, agreement on tanks ready

According to Gianni Dragoni for the Sole24Ore, Leonardo is said to be in very advanced negotiations with the German group Rheinmetall to create an alliance in land-based armaments. The discussion, Dragoni writes, is based on the possibility of establishing an industrial joint venture to manage future production contracts for new heavy tanks and new armored infantry vehicles for the Italian army.

According to Dragons the expected expenditure for future orders is estimated at 20 billion euros over ten years, to produce 280 tanks and over a thousand lighter tracked vehicles. According to authoritative sources, a preliminary agreement between the two groups should be signed tomorrow. The aim of the alliance, reports Gianni Dragoni, is also Leonardo’s entry into the international table for the realization of the project of the future European heavy tank. After the memorandum of understanding, Dragoni claims, there will have to be negotiations to make the agreement operational with the first contract with the Defense for tanks that could be awarded by the end of the year.
