On Thursday 27 June, in the council room of the Province of Varese, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Prefecture of Varese, the Lombardy Region (Department of Security and Civil Protection), Ferrovie Nord, Trenord, the Public Transport Agency was renewed Local and several municipalities in the province of Varese. This agreement aims to promote integrated safety at train stations and on buses, as well as combating the illegal operation of taxis. A representative of the Railway Police Department for Lombardy was also present.

In addition to the lead municipalities of Varese, Busto Arsizio and Gallarate, the municipalities of Albizzate, Arcisate, Ferno, Luino, Saronno, Sesto Calende, Somma Lombardo and Tradate also joined the Agreement.

The membership of the Municipalities listed above – and those that will join subsequently – will allow the local police to collaborate with the State Police, the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza to increase checks and supervision near the stations and on public transport . In this context, the Railway Police maintains exclusive competence in matters of control and supervision in stations and on trains.

The Protocol will come to an end by the end of the year. The objective is to extend it to other municipalities and strengthen the operations of the local police forces in smaller municipalities, increasing the staff and resources available. This underlines the crucial importance of the local police in ensuring the safety of citizens.

“This work began two years ago following the reporting of some critical issues. A deep thank you to the members of the Local Police for the excellent results already achieved and for having expressed their potential to the maximum, putting them at the service of the communities” – said the Prefect Salvatore Pasquariello.

Furthermore, the regional councillor Romano La Russa underlined that €60,000.00 have been allocated for the current year and that passenger safety continues to be a priority also thanks to the contribution of all the actors who wanted to renew the important protocol signed today”.
