An eight-year-old boy died while playing in the courtyard of his home in Montemarano, in the province of Avellino. The tragedy occurred last night at around 8pm, when the child was crushed by an iron table he was playing with. The furniture came loose from its attachment to the floor, leaving the child no escape. The victim was the only child of a couple, who lives in the rural district of Macchia del Monte. The family was preparing to go to the patron festival, which was taking place in the nearby hamlet. The mayor of Motemarano, Beniamino Palmieri, declared city mourning and the concert in Povia was cancelled. On social media the mayor of Montemarano wrote: «We are experiencing a tragedy that leaves us speechless and which throws us into a state of deep pain and sincere emotion. We all have the duty to mourn this child, who passed away in such a difficult way, we all have the duty to rally around his family, because this mourning belongs to all of Montemarano. Acting as an interpreter of the sentiment of the entire community, I decided to proclaim city mourning.”
