“They were stowed on a six-metre dinghy”

Stowed on a six-meter dinghy without even a life jacket, some of them with burns caused by the journey. Thus, forty-seven refugees, including three women and five minors, were found from the Life Support vessel Emergency who rescued them yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 26 June, in international waters of the Libyan SAR area after leaving Zwara (Libya). Fleeing countries afflicted by violence, conflict, political instability and poverty such as Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Eritrea, Bangladesh, South Sudan and Sudan, they will arrive next Sunday 30 June in Livorno. This is in fact the port assigned to the humanitarian association as explained by the head of mission of Life Support, Carlo Maisano: “The authorities have assigned us Livorno with Place of safety (Pos) for disembarkation, where we will arrive on Sunday morning after three and a half days of navigation All shipwrecked people are vulnerable: they have a long journey behind them and they have the right to arrive in a safe port as soon as possible. There is no reason for them to remain at sea for another few days after everything they have experienced.”

“Fortunately during the rescue there were no critical conditions – adds Crescenzo Caiazza, nurse on board the Emergency ship -, the boys had not been at sea for many hours and their boat held up despite the bad weather conditions. In the next few days of navigation, however, the medical staff will continue to monitor the health conditions of all castaways and treat cases of burns and joint pain”.
