“We strongly wanted this meeting with experts and workers in the sector – he explains Antonella Rizzo, General Secretary of the Uila of Lecce – to draw attention to the emergency of wild sea urchin fishing which triggered the three-year biological closure in Puglia (or at least until 30 April 2025, when an evaluation of the effectiveness will be made of the ban) and inevitably generated strong concern among professional fishermen. There is no doubt that the ‘sea urchin’ resource is experiencing a moment of very serious crisis in our territory which is putting its survival at risk. It is therefore very right to want to protect this resource and with it the marine ecosystem, but we ask politicians to take care of the sea urchin fishermen and their families with equal diligence and attention, guaranteeing them first of all adequate and urgent compensation measures , as well as interventions aimed at implementing the culture of health and safety and enhancing the entire fishing sector, which plays a strategic role in the context of the national and community economy”.
