Do the passport it will no longer be an Odyssey: starting since July the document may in fact be requested or renewed at post offices throughout Italy. The results of the experimental project launched in mid-March in the province of Bologna led the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, in agreement with the General Director of Poste Italiane Giuseppe Lasco, to extend the service to all 13,000 post offices in our country.
Il electronic passport It was born with the idea of streamlining the bureaucratic process for its release and, in general, to simplify the relationship with the Public Administration (see for example the Electronic Identity Card for access to PA online services which is enjoying great success among citizens).
The big news is that from July, once the necessary regulatory steps have been completed, this service will gradually involve Post Offices throughout Italy, without distinctions between small and large centers. Polis is moving forward quickly, to date we have already started 2,400 interventions and completed over 1,500 Post Offices throughout Italy. On the instructions of the Ministry of the Interior, we have taken an active part in extending the passport request service to support Police Headquarters and Police Stations, since last March we have registered more than 350 requests from the 31 Post Offices where the service is active and by the end of the month, over 130 Post Offices will already be operational. I would like to point out that over 80% of citizens have requested home delivery of their passports via Poste Italiane, with significant savings in time and travel, especially for the environment. – Giuseppe Lasco, General Manager of Poste Italiane
It is important to underline that the extension of the service does not only take place to municipalities with less than 15,000 inhabitants as initially foreseen by the Polis project, but to everyone. These are the numbers recorded to date:
- 31 post offices involved in the province of Bologna
- I am 327 questions received from March to today
- 130 municipalities where the service will be extended by the end of May
- There will be 13,000 post offices in total where you can apply for a new passport or to renew your existing one

There are more and more post offices where you can get a passport. In fact, according to the Polis project, The new phase starts today, July 1st which will bring the service progressively in all post offices in Italy without any distinction between municipalities with less than and above 15,000 inhabitants.
As explained by Poste, the Polis project financed by the PNRR aims to transform the post office in a “home of digital services” where citizens can easily and quickly access Public Administration services.
