G7, Italy confirms commitments: no step backwards on abortion

Behind the scenes of G7 there is an ongoing “clash” between the delegations over the conclusions of the summit. On one side there are the Italian Sherpas, on the other the French ones and the object of the dispute is theabortion. Or rather, the ways in which the theme is inserted into the document. While the Italian opposition has wasted no time, seizing the opportunity to exploit what is happening in Puglia, in Brindisi the work is progressing smoothly, with the need to find a solution to what is a mere political and non-conceptual theme. The journalists following Joe Biden took at face value the rumors that leaked in the previous hours regarding Italy’s elimination of the issue of abortion, when, instead, what is currently available is a not final draft which is being worked on to find a political compromise.

The Italian position

Italy has never deleted abortion from the summit conclusions and mediations are currently underway to overcome France’s intransigent position. “Was a spite artfully constructed by Paris to tarnish the Italian G7“, say today Italian sources reported by Corriere della Sera. Following the controversy, Italian sources on the sidelines of the summit underway in Puglia let it be known “in the text that will be published tomorrow there is no step backwards compared to the conclusions of Hiroshima summit. Nothing has been taken away from the commitments made“. Then, they add: “It’s a story whipped like cream, the suspicion is one electoral exploitation or post-election, someone who wanted to insert a disturbing element into a G7 that is doing very well“.

What really happened in Puglia

In Puglia the delegations have been working on this document for days, which is shared by everyone, except on the single point of abortion. On the part of France there is a desire to include abortion as a fundamental right, which would implicitly become a recognition of the recent Transalpine intervention in the country’s Constitution, where the termination of pregnancy was added. On the other hand, however, there is Italy which, as reported by the Corriere della Seradid not oppose France’s request but asked that a mention of the duty of prevention by the State. However, France opposed this and therefore the work was interrupted and then resumed in the next few hours.

However, Emmanuel Macron he arrived in Italy for the G7 just a few days after the electoral defeat suffered at the European elections, with the consequences of the dissolution of the Assembly and consequent last-minute calling of new electoral consultations. While Giorgia Meloni, as well as being president of this G7, emerged more than strengthened by the results of the polls. France is looking for a tug of war to make people feel like they still count for something, despite the debacle and has chosen to start the tug of war on a topic that they know is the subject of discussion in our country. Italy has attempted to mediate, accepting the French proposal but balancing it with an insert of common sense that aims at prevention, but the Transalpines need their position to stand out and therefore the solution has not yet been found mediation. And this is why the theme is not yet present in the conclusions of the draft, which is not definitive because the work has not yet stopped.

The US position

And it is precisely starting from the erroneous assumption of the American press, according to which Italy has eliminated that part, that Jake SullivanUS national security advisor, responded to reporters: “President Biden always talks about human rightshe does it with all the interlocutors and I don’t expect it to be different in the next two days“.

Then, the representative of the US delegation in Brindisi added that “the president does not change his message based on the interlocutor e none of this will change today“. At the moment, however, the topic should not be an official subject of bilateral discussion between the Italian prime minister and the American president.
