LECCE – Adriana Poli Bortone is the new mayor of Lecce, with 50.69% obtained in the run-off, 23,780 votes, against 49.31% 23,134 votes: the united centre-right coalition triumphs in the Lecce capital, after 7 years in opposition. The party explodes in the committee near Piazza Mazzini: Pagliaro, Lisi, Marti and the other big names improvise a security cordon to prevent people from crowding around the winner. She is almost moved. Hugs, liberating shouts and horns, then off to Piazza Sant’Oronzo for the rally to say goodbye to the city. The nostalgia effect, which worked with the Brindisi centre-right, also worked in Lecce. We wrote it at a time when there was no doubt that there was a probability that it would go like this.
Carlo Salvemini was rejected by the people of Lecce: he was looking for the third victory, the second in the run-off, but this time it didn’t work. Neither Delli Noci nor Emiliano (who was in Lecce in the last few hours) were able to stop the desire of the people of Lecce for change. Now the city is split in two and the mayor will have to do a difficult job of mending, reconstructing and also economically relaunching the city. At 5.30pm Carlo Salvemini comes out to talk to journalists and says he is proud of the work done and the measures adopted for Lecce. He congratulates the mayor. The outgoing mayor appears calm. Yet his former allies from Puglia Popolare had warned him that his image was falling and that the primaries had been a flop. The mayor thought he would replace those who turned their backs on him with the 5 Star Movement, which however does not receive even one municipal councilor and almost halves the votes. This is one of the few cases in the capital in which an outgoing mayor is rejected.
