Giorgia Meloni also welcomed the Hungarian president with flattering words, praising in particular the choices of Orban regarding the priorities of the rotating EU presidency which will begin in a week.

In particular, Meloni appreciated the choice to include among the subjects of greatest interest and impact to be addressed in the next six months birth rate decline, which is affecting not only Italy but a large part of Europe.

However, Meloni then admitted the distances onUkraine with Orban: “We discussed the Ukrainian conflict, our positions are not always the same but I appreciate the Hungarian position in the EU and NATO which allows allies to make important decisions even when they do not agree” he commented.

Both Hungary and Italy find themselves isolated in the EU when it comes to the appointments of President of the Commission, of the Council and of the Parliamentthe so-called “Top Jobs” which will be designated by the member countries.

Meloni in particular would like to see his role recognized as head of one of the parties with the most seats in Parliament, but as part of a group, that of the conservatives, which is unlikely to support Von der Leyen to the presidency of the Commission.
