For the moment there is not yet an open negotiation, but Carlo Cimbri does not close the possibility of Unipol-Bper’s involvement in MPS. On Monday 24 June the number one of the Bolognese company commented on the recent rumors reported by MF-Milano Finanza about a possible involvement in the Siena match.
Cimbri’s words
«There is nothing in the immediate future but you can never tell», commented Cimbri, adding: «Bper it has its own growth path; has recently changed top management and Gianni Franco Papa (new CEO of the bank, ed) has a outlined path ahead of it which is already as it is. There is nothing in the immediate future”, explained Cimbri, speaking at a conference organized for the 50th anniversary of The newspaper.
For the president of Unipol, however, «the market is made up of discontinuities. Opportunities can be created and the future cannot be mortgaged. I think of what happened with the Cassa di Genova.”
The hypothesis under study
All eyes are on the gradual exit process of the treasure from the capital of MPS. After the expiration of the lock-up on the shares of the Sienese bank, on Monday 1 July the Treasury will not rush to sell its remaining 26.7%.
The main road to honoring the commitments made with Brussels and exiting Siena by 2024 should instead involve the identification of one or more anchor investors on which to hinge the final stages of privatization. The hypotheses under study are different, all sharing a strong industrial profile and consistency with the bank’s current and future strategies.
The Unipol card
The name that has always been in circulation is that of Unipol which, according to simulations carried out in some investment banks, could take over 10% of Siena’s capital and take over from Axa as the bank’s insurance partner. The company chaired by Carlo Cimbri is one of the main players in the Italian insurance market as well as the reference shareholder of Bper (19.9%) and Popolare di Sondrio (19.7%).
