“There are foreigners, especially Americans, who leave tips of 50 euros.” Francesco recently discovered the world of golf cars in Rome. «A friend of mine who has been working there for a long time told me about it». How much does he earn? «She left her previous job where she managed to get up to 3000 euros a month». A profession, therefore, which can prove to be more remunerative than many others. «Of course, there are periods in which there is more attendance (such as the summer) and those in which there are fewer tourists. But he now has a contract with the tour operator, he is not tied to the flows, and he is happy.” Above all, as the young woman explains, he likes dealing with foreigners. “They are available and don’t have too many demands.” Then, a tour is not exhausting: it can last from an hour up to two. «I act as an assistant, that is, I drive the golf car behind the one in which the guide is. The tourists on board with me have headphones and listen to the explanations. The guide often reveals curiosities about Rome, where film scenes were filmed or where famous actors stayed. These are the details that he likes most.” How much is he paid? «The fee is 60 euros, including lunch which is offered to me. Then there are the tips, which reach up to 50 euros. While driving them he takes more than double.” How many tours per day? “Three. And she gets around 180 euros each.” However, it is not an easy job. «Driving in traffic in Rome is tiring. And then you also need to know English very well.”
