Vittoria’s fruit and vegetable market and Zarba’s resignation, Italia Viva speaks: “We hope for a worthy successor”

“The recent news of the resignation of the president of the dealers’ association of the fruit and vegetable market of Vittoria, Giuseppe Zarba, cannot leave the politics of our province indifferent, given that the fruit and vegetable market is, in its own right, the driving force of the economy of the South East Sicily”. This is what Roberto Di Bona, Marco Dezio and Salvo Liuzzo, managers of Italia Viva, say in a note.

“The work carried out by Zarba, in the exercise of the role he held – they clarify – was absolutely profitable, especially with regards to the vision aimed at obtaining funds for the improvement of the market structure and, above all, with a view to of a clear improvement in the standards of legality and efficiency of economic dynamics. Last but not least, the idea, which we have always clearly supported, regarding the validity of the decision, promoted by Zarba, to join Italmercati. It was a brilliant and innovative choice, rejected due to decidedly questionable political-administrative decisions. These resignations, together with the elimination of the top management of Vittoria Mercati, which had been able to attract funds for significant investments and improve the health of its balance sheet, can only cause concern for the future of the fruit and vegetable market. We also believe that it is wrong to say that the conditions for a dialogue with the dealers’ association have only now been created. Interlocution between the municipal administration and market operators cannot take place only when the heads of the trade associations are acceptable to the mayor. The common good and the functioning of the fruit and vegetable market must have priority over personal grudges that lead nowhere.” “It is good to reiterate – Di Bona, Dezio and Liuzzo continue – that we at Italia Viva have always been in favor of Italmercati’s entry into the Vittoria market. Also because the contract in question would have had an annual duration and therefore would not have been a leap in the dark, as proposed by the mayor. We still don’t understand the reason, nowadays, why the agricultural mercurial, after having been abolished because it was believed to be obsolete, has not been replaced by a new one in step with the times, despite the dealers’ association having launched a proposal to this effect, to protect producers. We hope that in the near future something will be done on these issues and we hope that the next president will continue the action of the resigning president”.
