The Gallarate hospital is facing a serious health crisis after the resignation of the head of surgery, which has put the structure in further difficulty
GALLARATE – Angelo Benevento, primary of the department of Surgery of theSant’Antonio Abate Hospital Of Gallarate, announced his imminent retirement due to the growing difficulties facing the healthcare institution. Benevento expressed concern for the future of local healthcare, underlining the serious shortage of medical personnel. In Busto Arsizio five surgeons are missing, in Saronno seven, a situation destined to worsen with the next scheduled releases. Despite the competitions announced, vacancies remain an unsolved problem, and Benevento has criticized theAsst Valle Olona for not accepting his request to extend his service to seventy years.
The head physician also highlighted the daily challenges of medical staff, forced to cover night shifts in the emergency room up to twenty times a month, unpaid activities that compromise regular surgical operations. The flight of medical specialists, including department managers, has further weakened the structure, particularly in critical areas such as Cardiology, Radiology And Anesthesia. This situation contributed to a significant collapse in post-Covid surgical turnover, which fell from fifty million euros to a range of twenty/thirty million per year, with only fourteen active beds often overcrowded by patients from other departments.
Benevento has proposed a single solution to relaunch the hospital: the creation of a new modern healthcare center equipped with the best technologies, capable of guaranteeing maximum functionality and efficiency without compromising existing services. Despite his criticisms, he recognized that Sant’Antonio Abate, like other Asst hospitals, needs a radical upgrade to meet future challenges.
