The “Pozzuoli Sicura” Committee in a long and harsh letter, through its spokesperson Ciro Di Franciaannounces that from tomorrow, Monday 24 June, from 10am to 7pmin Republic squarewill start a continuous garrison with the chain hunger strike. The Committee’s decision comes after the Government’s postponement to the end of the month new law decree on bradyseism.
“The Government postpones to the end of June the law which should provide security to Pozzuoli and support to citizens for the banned houses. And now he announces that the main part of the decree will not concern provisions, appropriations, contributions. The measure is full. Pozzuoli does not expect anything special by asking for security and support like mountain cities hit by landslides or cities near rivers hit by floods have had.
Pozzuoli has always been hit by medium-sized earthquakes which have never produced victims or collapses, but the fragility of buildings “weakened” by long exposure to continuous tremors for long periods. We have known since the 80s what is necessary to deal with the situation and, consequently, the Government and Administration are unacceptablely late in adopting the measures necessary to deal with this new bradyseismic crisis.
And that these delays have gone beyond the limits of bearability is demonstrated by the formation of many civic committees that ask for clarity, security and support. The multiplication of these aggregations demonstrates the vitality of Pozzuoli and its desire to continue to be the city that has stood for millennia between the Solfatara and the sea.
But this flourishing of Committees, appeals and demonstrations lasting a few hours has demonstrated that they are not sufficient to push the Government and Administration to take necessary and now indispensable measures. It is therefore necessary to start a civil, democratic, peaceful, but long-term, incisive and sensational struggle in order to bring the responsibilities of the Government, Administration and various responsible bodies to national attention.
Pozzuoli has the right to immediately have:
The official indication of the maximum magnitude of the seismic event, expected to be 5:0;
on the basis of this official data it is necessary to have certified and definitive checks that clarify which buildings are able to safely resist the expected earthquake; which buildings are not and must be renovated with the guarantee of state contribution for renovations certified as earthquake-proof; which buildings are possibly not renovatable and how it is intended to do so, without prejudice to the fact that the objective is to have a state intervention that allows everyone to remain in Pozzuoli which has been made safe;
the provision of contributions and services suitable for living and working for families with prohibited homes;
For these things to which Pozzuoli has the right, and which up to now have been culpably denied, it is now necessary – after civil demonstrations and reasonable proposals ignored, after promises made and disregarded – to form long, incisive and sensational struggles that force the Government to adopt in the measure scheduled for the end of June, those decisions that were always announced and never taken;
The Pozzuoli Sicura Committee organizes itself, as mentioned at the beginning, in a mobilization that lasts until the decree is issued and based on what the decree contains it will be decided, together with all the other interested parties, whether and how to continue the fight;
In the meantime, citizens, committees, associations, trade unions and politicians are invited to join and concretely support a humane and determined struggle to have a finally safe Pozzuoli“.
