The latest report: calves and pigs floating in the Gambaresca in Pontevico. Hunt for those responsible. The identification tags are removed from the cattle

The irrigation ditches and canals in the Lower Brescia area continue to be illegal deposits of animal carcasses. The latest episode, which dates back to a week ago, occurred in Pontevico.

In the Brescia town on the border with the province of Cremona, some residents have reported the presence of pig and calf carcasses floating in the Gambaresca canal.

“It’s not the first time such incidents have occurred,” they say in a bar along the small waterway. “In some periods – they continue – a strong stench arises and the remains of the animals can be seen.” The illegal disposal of animals is a bad habit that has continued over time in these parts and, with great probability, the carcasses of young calves or pigs (once a horse was also found) come from the Verolanuova area.

It is in the nearby municipality, with great probability, that someone throws the dead animals into the canal. Basically, the reports come from citizens and representatives of the irrigation consortia who find these dead animals. In reality, for a period, there were no more reports. Now, however, the Pontevico episode has occurred even though, more often than not, many people avoid reporting it. It is not easy to trace those responsible who, before throwing away the carcasses, especially calves, remove the labels and so it becomes difficult, if not impossible, for the police to identify those responsible for the illegal disposal of the carcasses.

«The abandonment of waste, even animal carcasses – says Diego Balduzzi, agronomist of the Oglio-Mella Consortium – is a dramatically widespread phenomenon: anything can now be found in the canals with the consequent environmental and hydraulic safety risks when the material blocks gates or pipe passages. Everything can be found in the cleaners and the Consortium is committed to recovering what is poured into the water with a clear increase in costs for both the consortium and municipal administration coffers”.
