The statue of the Norman Warrior vandalized

The statue of the Norman Warrior in Aversa vandalized. Yet another act of vandalism in the city of Aversa. This time, the one to pay the price was a work by Maestro Angelo Golia, located near the roundabout of Viale Olimpico, which was semi-destroyed by gangs of young thugs.

The work, a sculpture representing a Norman warrior in the act of throwing a blow, was bent on itself and the sword was broken at the hilt.

It is not the first time that the city of Aversa has been the scene of vandalism. Historic premises such as Palazzo Rebursa and various educational institutions are often targeted. This episode adds to a long series of acts of incivility that seem to have become a sad normality for the local community.

The vandalized sculpture had a particular meaning. Angelo Golia, who passed away some time ago, dedicated the figure of the Norman warrior to the journalist Giancarlo Siani, killed by the Camorra. In 2017, the municipal council, on the proposal of the councilor for legality and transparency Alfonso Oliva, enthusiastically welcomed the initiative of Goliath, who had donated the work depicting a warrior. The sculpture was supposed to represent the young Il Mattino reporter who fights against organized crime, a symbol of resistance and courage.

This latest offense against the city’s cultural heritage has raised indignation and concern among citizens and local authorities. Aversa, which hopes to apply as Capital of Culture, has to deal with a civic decay that seems far from being resolved.
