On 23 June 2002, exactly 22 years ago, the brutal femicide of Monica Moretti in Sassari.
A 38-year-old urologist doctor at Santissima Annunziata, she was massacred with 50 stab wounds in her bedroom by Raimondo Gaspa, 31, her former patient who persecuted her. The man, caught within a few days, confessed: «I called her, but she rejected me, she didn’t want to know about me. That’s why I decided to go to her house,” she told the investigators. Monica was punched, strangled and stabbed 50 times, he tried to burn down the house before fleeing to erase traces of her.
It was some neighbors who raised the alarm by letting the smoke come out of the house. The firefighters found Monica lying on the bed in a bathing suit, with a knife stuck in her throat.
The killer took away the telephone and answering machine, in the days before the crime he called the woman 20-30 times a day. A former patient of the woman, separated and with a 10-year-old paraplegic son, Raimondo Gaspa was a very private person.
The story has returned to the headlines in recent days because Gaspa, released from Rebibbia prison on 21 April after 22 years in cell, was arrested again for stalking. According to a macabre scheme that recalls the persecution against poor Monica, the man began to persecute a twenty-year-old he had met in prison, the girlfriend of another inmate. He made dozens of calls a day, stalking, a disturbing message (“I saw you while you were shopping”). The girl, forced to move house, reported him and the police managed to trace Gaspa, who returned to prison in Regina Coeli.
In the judge’s order we read that the man «to date appears to be drawn from an irrepressible criminal impulse which led him to reproduce, a few hours after his release from prison for the voluntary murder of the woman he had fallen in love with in 2002, serious illicit conduct, engaging in criminal behavior that denotes a truly serial nature.”
