CATANIA – Nobody thinks of considering San Cristoforo, or any area of Catania, a “free zone in which it is possible to impose rules different from those of ordinary living civil”. It is impossible to imagine this area as free from rules and laws “that regulate coexistence in our communities”. This was declared by the Catania police commissioner Giuseppe Bellassai.
The Catania police chief thus illustrated the service which brought over 50 police officers onto the streets for an important extraordinary control of the territory. In recent hours the police have patrolled the San Cristoforo neighborhood. The area was entirely cordoned off by officers from the Catania Police Headquarters.
Over 50 agents
There were the men of the Flying and Flying Squad of the Crime Prevention Department, supported by the Mobile and Dog Department teams and with the help of the Local Police and Fire Brigade. The action was also intensified following the episode of violence against the police officers who intervened in recent days in Via Stella Polare.
After a report from some residents of the area – for disturbing the public peace with shouts and annoying noises, made by about ten people – the officers were attacked while trying to identify one of the people present. Then everything, thanks to the arrival of reinforcements, calmed down.
The patrols
The police activity developed in the last few hours has allowed the entire neighborhood to be monitored inch by inch. It is a reality constantly monitored through various and targeted interventions aimed at combating conduct dangerous to public order and any other form of illegality. More than 90 people and 45 vehicles were checked.
20 infringements were confirmed and 10 vehicles were seized. A 52 year old was reported because he was riding a scooter without a helmet despite being under special surveillance. Then anti-drug searches were carried out. And with Enel technicians checks to ascertain any unauthorized connections.
The betting center closed
The police finally have a betting center closed for 15 days following a decision by the police commissionerbecause it is “habitual meeting place for people deemed dangerous”. It happened right in the area where the attack on the police officers took place. Investigations are underway aimed at identifying the individuals held responsible for the attack on the policemen.
“The commitment of the State Police has been, is and will always be constant in every neighborhood, through targeted extraordinary territorial control services – explains the Catania Police Commissioner, Giuseppe Bellassai -, we wanted take important actions aimed at restoring legality in every respect”.
“The action of the Police Headquarters and other law enforcement agencies – he concludes – will continue incessantly, with the aim of guarantee normal conditions of order and safety for everyone public”.
