On 23 December 2016, a 22-year-old was found hanged in a railway underpass in the province of Bari. For that death, as a consequence of mistreatment in the family, the ex-boyfriend and live-in partner of a young woman is being investigated. The decision to include the man, now 35 years old, in the register of suspects was the judge of Trani Marina Chiddo who rejected the request for dismissal presented by the prosecutor who was investigating for incitement to suicide. According to the judge, the 22-year-old committed suicide because of “the progressive nullification of her own person in which she had found herself as a result of the oppressive, violent and threatening conduct carried out by her cohabiting partner”.

In one of the telephone messages reported in the documents, the young woman accused the man of being “violent” and of having “beaten” her for the “fourth time”. For the judge “the profile of a violent and easily angered man emerges, against whom” the 22-year-old “he was in a state of profound psychological awe and emotional dependence“.
“The extrapolated chat messages – we read in the documents – showed the picture of a relationship which took the form of conduct not only of physical violence on the part of the suspect, but through a series of behaviors of moral conditioning and psychological depletion” and “of demolition of the dignity of women”.
