Pisa, 21 June 2024 – On the initiative of Network of Italian Universities for Peace (RUniPace) the research doctorate of national interest in Peace Studies was established, the first in Italy and Europe. There are 34 Italian partner universities, including the University of Pisa, which hosts the course at the Department of Law. Candidates can apply until 10 July 2024. There are 41 places available, of which 36 have scholarships. For the University of Pisa, professors Valentina Bonini, Enza Pellecchia and professor Pierluigi Consorti are part of the teaching body, while the coordinator of the doctorate is professor Alessandro Saggioro of the Sapienza University of Rome.

The doctorate presents itself as a first response by Italian universities to the spread of wars, offering a scientific contribution for alternative conflict management to the use of weapons. The objective is to become a point of reference also for international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations by offering higher education of an interdisciplinary nature.

The course is structured in 10 training curricula with the University of Pisa present in two: “Identity, Memories, Religions and Peace” and “Restorative justice, transitional justice and nonviolent conflict transformation”.

“The doctorate of national interest in Peace Studies – declares Professor Enza Pellecchia, coordinator of the Network of Universities for Peace – is an ambitious project to which the University of Pisa has made an important contribution thanks to the tradition of Sciences for Peace, evidenced by the presence of the CISP-Interdisciplinary Center for Peace Sciences and the degree courses in Peace Sciences”.
