ANCONA – Ancona firefighters worked all night to put out the fire that broke out in a shed in Baraccola where paper collection is carried out. The flames broke out around 11pm yesterday evening 19 June, both outside and inside the warehouse, which is located near the Mirum Center in Ancona. In the end the red flames managed to put out the fire. At the moment you can still see some smoke coming from inside the paper ecoballs, but the fire was put out at first light.
The firefighters’ activity will continue for another day at least to achieve a complete cessation of smoke and to complete the cleanup of the area.
From the Municipality of Ancona, it is announced that: «Following the fire that broke out last night at the DS Smith Recycling company in via Caduti del Lavoro, this morning the Mayor Daniele Silvetti signed the provision to protect public health, with which the division of the area concerned into three zones”.
For the red zone the closure of the sports facilities and homes adjacent to the area affected by the fire is ordered, until their static nature is verified, as well as the cleaning of the appurtenances and external surfaces in the open air. The verification of the static integrity of the structures must be certified by a qualified technician.
For the orange zone the closure of the production activities is ordered until the streets are cleaned (by the respective managers) for the removal of the residual elements, the outdoor appurtenances (including the equipment present, by the respective managers), the external surfaces and the cleaning or replacing air conditioner filters.
Finally, one was also identified yellow area, for which it is recommended to carry out the cleaning of the streets (by the respective Managers) for the removal of the residual elements present on the ground and of the outdoor appurtenances for the structures of any type (including any equipment present, by of the respective Managers); Furthermore, in this area it is advisable to clean all external surfaces and suspend use of the air conditioners until the relevant filters have been cleaned/replaced. Finally, it would be advisable to carefully wash plant products from private gardens and crops with running water before consumption and to feed farmyard animals with packaged feed, avoiding contact with the soil.
«It is good practice – reminds the Municipality of Ancona – to use personal protective equipment during cleaning operations, regardless of the type of area involved. The provisions identified in the Union Ordinance, agreed with Arpam, AST Area Vasta 2 and bodies responsible for the protection of public health, may be subject to modifications following surveys and measurements that will be carried out on site by Arpam technicians (Regional Agency for environmental protection)” .
«The situation is under control and all public health precautions have been taken. With this ordinance the closure of the company and the classification of the closest areas are ordered. The red zone – explains Mayor Silvetti – is the one that affects the area of the fire, i.e. the area in which the company exists. The orange zone is located adjacent to the red one and in this case warnings have been issued for citizens and businesses; the yellow zone, which is located within a radius of one kilometer from the fire, is the one free from any prescription.
