Bologna, the delivery of the silver Turrita to Pelliconi, a leading company in the production of corks

The Turrita d’Argento is one of the honors that the Municipality confers, by decree of the mayor, to people or entities who have distinguished themselves for contributing to the progress of the city. Yesterday, Monday 17 June, the silver reproduction of Bologna was conferred by Matteo Lepore to Pelliconi, world leading company in the production of caps, born under the Two Towers in 1939 and moved to Ozzano in the sixties. Last March the company celebrated eighty-five years of activity and on that date Palazzo d’Accursio’s decision also arrived.

The meeting in the Red Room

«We didn’t expect it – declares the CEO, Marco Checchi – and, like all unexpected things, it is an even more welcome recognition. It is the culmination of a journey what we have done to support artistic, sporting, research and community life; a journey that will continue in the coming years. I hope that Pelliconi will always have positive balance sheets, which will allow us to distribute funding throughout the entire territory.” Checchi was in the Sala Rossa with his wife Claudia Gnudi, the latter’s parents Franco Gnudi and Maria Teresa Pelliconi, daughter of the founder Angelo, and his son Enrico.

Sponsor of Bologna and Virtus

Pelliconi, which has around seven hundred employees in eight offices around the world and produces 32 billion corks a year, is a sponsor of Bologna and Virtus; it supports cultural institutions such as the Cineteca and healthcare through donations to Sant’Orsola, Rizzoli and Bellaria. «An always elegant and never invasive presence – remarks Lepore –; However, it was a very important commitment because numbers, especially in the world of culture and sport, are substance.” These are the reasons revealed during the ceremony by the councillor, Roberta Li Calzi: «Founded in Bologna in 1939 as “Ditta Angelo Pelliconi” by a small manufacturer of small metal parts who saw a crown cap on a bottle and wanted to replicate it, Pelliconi is today a world leader in the sector of metal and plastic closures for the food & beverage industry”.

Li Calzi: company attentive to reducing waste

«In the path undertaken – continues Li Calzi – it has proven to be an important enterprise for our territory and to be a full part of the beating heart of that economy which leads Bologna, and the region of which it is the capital, to be among the main productive areas of Europe”. «Alongside its economic successes, Pelliconi is characterized by its concrete commitment to support the global sustainable development plan of the UN Agenda 2030. In the spirit of the circular economy – he closes -, it pursues a production and business management model attentive to the reduction of waste, aimed where possible at the design of innovative products, the use of raw materials and processes with reduced environmental impact, the reduction of waste , recycling and valorisation of waste. Its sustainability report highlights the activities that the company carries out to care for the local communities where it operates, donating part of its profits to the benefit of scientific research and the support of social, cultural and artistic activities. Activities and generous attention from which the city and its community gratefully benefit.”
