In the on his birthday, a special visit for Marshal Major Adjutant of the Carabinieri Donato Palumbo who celebrates today its 102 springs.
A gift that came from Rome with a letter from the General Commander delivered, on behalf of all the Carabinieri, by the highest summit of the Lucanian Army: the Commander of the “Basilicata” Carabinieri Legion, Brigadier General Giancarlo Scafuri.
The high officer, accompanied by the Commander of the Venosa Company, Major Antonino Di Noia and the Commander of the local Station, Lieutenant Giulio Cicciomessere, was welcomed by his colleague on leave with great enthusiasm and emotion.
Feelings that pervaded all his guests in the moments that followed: a real crossroads of experiences, memories and emotions for those like him who were born right in Palazzo San Gervasio on 18 June one hundred and two years ago.
Enlisting in the Grenadiers of Sardinia at the age of 19 and then joining the Carabinieri on 15 March 1943, he participated in the last world war, in the Greek campaign, where he experienced imprisonment and deportation in the Melseburg camp in Germany. Returning to Italy in 1945, he was assigned to the Bari Carabinieri Legion Command where he was employed until 1964, when he moved to Rome to hold delicate positions in the Senate of the Republic and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
After taking leave in 1984, he returned in his Palazzo San Gervasio, without ever ceasing to feel like a “Carabiniere”.
“Meeting him was a privilege,” declared General Scafuri, because from his voice you can hear the stories of those who experienced history firsthand and, in the Army family, also wrote it.
Witness to timeless values which still inspire the entire institution today and which Donato embodies in his being “Carabiniere forever”.
