THE BOOK:
If we pronounce the word Puglia under our lips, our mind begins to wander. The thought runs towards a brightly colored region. To wheat, to centuries-old olive trees, to gnarled vines. To wooded hills with trulli and crystalline beaches with saints who come from the sea. To the rose windows of the cathedrals, to the castles of Frederick II. To the lace and the lights. Yet it’s not just this. There is another Puglia, cradle of a cultural movement, which has given Italian literature of the last thirty years three Strega Awards. A region that is the mother, today, of a new generation of authors, fertile with a narrative ferment that is spreading throughout the entire nation. With this book, Piero Meli has created an emotional journey in a kaleidoscope of places and narrative suggestions. From the Gargano with Anna Maria Ortese and Mariateresa Di Leave, to Taranto with Alda Merini, from Salento with Omar Di Monopoli and Gabriella Genisi, to the Valle d’Itria with Mario Desiati. And Bari obviously, the author’s proxemic bubble. The capital is also told through the words of Nicola Lagioia and Pier Paolo Pasolini. To embellish the stops on the journey, Piero Meli provides information on places to visit and photograph. The narrative of each stage is enriched by some poems, an invisible melody that runs through the entire region.
