Bologna, 15 June 2024 – Mother and daughter are well. And this is the most important fact in the story of the Moroccan woman aged around 30 who she gave birth to her baby girl, alone, on a sidewalk in via Jacopo Barozzi, in San Donato area. The doctors at the Maggiore hospital, where they have both been hospitalized since Thursday morning but in different departments, met them yesterday, even if for a few minutes.

The team is now monitoring their conditions before discharging them, which will most likely happen early next week. From that moment and under the control of the social services, who took care of the woman and the newborn, a new emergency will begin ‘protected discharge’ path. A reception process that will pass through the identification of a protected structurepresumably an apartment, where both can stay safe and be looked after by the operators.

The mother will also be offered a detoxification process – which she herself decided to undertake – to try to get out of the drug addiction she had fallen into even before becoming pregnant. In the next few days the woman will also choose the name of the little girl.

But let’s review the facts. The young mother, homeless, gave birth alone on the side of the road, in via Barozzi. An anonymous call alerted 118: when the health workers arrived on site – together with the local police officers and two policemen of Polfer, who assisted the woman in the minutes before giving birth – the thirty-year-old had already given birth to her beautiful little girl. A story with a happy ending which, however, is closely intertwined with a condition of extreme marginalization in which the young mother lived.

The latter was in fact in charge of the Social Service protection of minors as early as the end of 2023, due to a previous pregnancy. Pregnancy from which a child was born, who since January of this year has been in a protected community which guarantees him care and assistance. In all these months, as explained by the Municipality, the mother has always been followed by services and street workers despite the fact that she has repeatedly refused to receive help.

After the birth of first sonshe had been offered to be placed within a community where she could start a mother-baby journey which, in cases like these, not only provides assistance but aims to reconstruct the parental picture. A path that, however, the thirty-year-old he never started.

The services have tried to contact her several times, but there was no longer any trace of her. For about two and a half months the woman was completely unavailable. An extremely difficult situation, made even more complicated by the lack of a partner and father of the children. The man, in fact, is currently in a repatriation detention center (CPR) in Friuli Venezia Giulia, waiting to be expelled from Italy.

When the operators finally managed to find her, unfortunately things did not change and the young mother carried on with hers second pregnancy once again refusing any kind of help.

Despite this, the street units that deal with drug addiction situations and social services they always continued to monitor the situation. Until recent days, when the thirty-year-old gave birth to her baby girl. As mentioned, the little girl is fine, although the doctors are monitoring her condition for problems related to her mother’s drug addiction. Now for both, however, there will be the possibility of a new beginning. The possibility of writing together a different and less painful story than the past one.
