They were ready to kill the bandits of the armed commando who attacked the vault of the Mondialpol surveillance institute, on the outskirts of Sassari, taking away several bags of money. The criminals, at least ten, armed with Kalashnikovs and dressed in camouflage and bulletproof vests, pulled an excavator up to the wall of the Mondialpol headquarters in Caniga, and using the length of the arm of the mechanical vehicle, they broke through the wall of the building. At the same time, other bandits climbed over the fence with a ladder and entered the premises from where they took several bags of money, took them out again with the bucket of the mechanical vehicle and loaded them onto a white Fiat Ducato van, with which they then fled towards Cagliari. Not before having shot at security guards to intimidate them: one of them who was in the surveillance box was saved thanks to the bulletproof glass. While the robbery was in progress a carabinieri car reached the Mondialpol headquarters and the bandits did not hesitate to riddle the vehicle with bullets, shooting at chest height and against the engine to block the police forces. Also in this case the two carabinieri were saved because the windshield withstood the impact of the bullets. The commando’s action was coordinated and studied down to the smallest detail: while part of the gang entered the vault, others blocked all the main access routes by setting cars on fire and sprinkling the asphalt with nails. In this way they covered their escape: all traffic around the city was blocked and the police reached the location of the robbery with difficulty. The anti-robbery plan was launched throughout northern Sardinia with checkpoints on the main roads in the Sassari and Nuorese areas, and with the Carabinieri helicopter hovering over the city all night. It is impossible at the moment to quantify the extent of the loot: the money taken was intended for the payment of pensions next week. It is the third time in a few years that the Mondialpol vault in Caniga has been attacked in the same way: in 2018 the robbers took possession of 10 million euros.
