Numerous scams have been recorded and many others have only been attempted, using the system of a false accident involving a family member. Reports come from Agrigento and much of the province.

The system is now known: the elderly person receives a phone call from a number that does not appear on the device’s screen, with a voice that sounds like a police sergeant, announcing a phantom accident involving a family member who is in safety cell, in the barracks, while the person hit would be seriously ill in hospital.

Obviously this is a pretext to scare and confuse the victim, who in the end is invited to pay a sum of money, or precious objects, to cover the first expenses to avoid worse trouble for the family member involved in the accident, who It’s completely made up. Of this phenomenon, around one hundred reports have been formalized since the beginning of the year between the Police Headquarters Complaints Office, Commissariats, Postal Police and Carabinieri Stations, for scams committed or merely attempted.

The police are carrying out extensive investigations, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Agrigento and Sciacca. Dozens and dozens of scam attempts have failed thanks to the cunning of the victims, who did not take the bait. Over twenty successful scams with elderly people giving gold and money worth thousands of euros to the scammers. The latest case in chronological order was recorded in Santo Stefano Quisquina, where a sixty-seven year old gave money and valuables worth around 6 thousand euros to the criminals.
