The municipal administration, on the initiative of the mayor Domenico Bennardi with the councilor for Productive Activities Lucia Gaudiano, accepting the request of the president of the Italian Celiac Association (Aic) of Basilicata, Rocco Laguardia, will reserve a hawker station at the beginning of via Don Minzoni on 1 and 2 July, for the tasting of foods free of gluten or gluten contamination, on the occasion of the next July 2nd celebration.

An act of inclusion and respect towards those suffering from this eating disorder, which is increasingly widespread in modern society. A decision made with a view to inclusion and healthy conviviality, thanks to the collaboration of some local traders and a well-known itinerant operator in the sector.

Furthermore, in the identified area, an information and awareness space will be set up, for correct information also through an information stand.

In Italy there are more and more people suffering from food intolerances, but celiac disease, a disease linked to chronic inflammation of the small intestine, triggered by the ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals, is particularly burdensome and difficult to manage.

Celiac disease cannot be cured, but… you can only live with it by avoiding gluten-containing products for life;

so much so that this disorder is also considered a socially disabling pathology, as there is no regulation aimed at guaranteeing that, at least in public contexts, there are spaces dedicated to them.

They comment Bennardi and Gaudiano:

«We wanted to embrace this cause of civility and inclusion to allow everyone to enjoy the celebration by tasting gastronomic products compatible with serious and widespread intolerances such as celiac disease.

An authentic “gluten free” area will be set up in via Don Minzoni, to welcome people suffering from this chronic disorder and not make them feel discriminated against. We also thank the municipal offices who worked quickly to organize this service, and the local food sector operators who immediately made themselves generously available.”
