Pernate, as the Galliate elections could block the logistics hub

“This is not a political issue: the newly elected mayor has always said he is against the logistics hub and therefore we are confident that he will respect what he has said.” With these words Paolo Manenti, of the Committee for Pernate, explains the messages of thanks that appeared on the Facebook page of the group of citizens of Pernate.

The topic in question is the election of a new mayor in Galliate: the local elections of recent days have in fact seen the outgoing mayor Claudiano Di Caprio defeated in favor of the challenger Alberto Cantone. During the election campaign, the newly elected center-left mayor had long addressed the topic of the logistics center that could be built in Pernate, saying he was against it. Although the hub area is located within the territory of Novara, the Municipality of Galliate would in fact have an important say in the matter, given that being bordering it would have to give approval to the resolution, which has already been approved by the Region, by Province and the Municipality of Novara.

“The Municipality of Galliate has not yet signed the resolution – explains Manenti -. For this reason we also turned to the citizens of Galliate, to make it clear that the construction of the hub would damage not only Pernate, but also Galliate. We are talking about around 500 heavy vehicles which would pass through the area every day, with an impressive impact in terms of pollution. Furthermore, the overbuilding of such a vast area would have a heavy impact on the aquifers, which also affect the Galliate area”.

In a public meeting in Galliate on 28 May the Committee explained its reasons. “We were very impressed by the reaction of the people of Galliate, who listened to us and followed us with great interest. We believe that the high voter turnout in Galliate (61.38% ed.) demonstrates that the citizens have taken the issue to heart and have gone to vote more than in other municipalities”. “We are however open to discussing with anyone, it is not a political question – reiterates Manenti -. We just want to find a solution to our problem and we hope that Cantone respects what he has always said. We wish this new administration, with whom we are ready to collaborate.”
