The storm over Udine and Friuli.

Dozens of fallen trees, flooding, roads flooded with water: once again, the violent storm which hit Udine and Friuli last night and caused damage and inconvenience. According to the Civil Protection, phenomena of this magnitude occur in the capital once every 2-5 years. Today, around a quarter past ten, the mayor Alberto Felice De Toni will make an inspection of the city to carry out the point of the situation and a first assessment of the damage.

The weather situation.

A Atlantic pressure continues to flow towards Northern Italy humid and cool south-westerly currents maintaining instability diffuse atmospheric. Starting from 6.30pm on June 10th one series of storm cells they develop on the Carnic Pedemontana. One of the cells takes over supercellular characteristics in the Spilimbergo area, then moving towards Udine and leading to heavy showers, numerous lightning strikes, gusty winds and small hail.

Around 8.30 pm the storm cells organize themselves into a multi-cell system that affects a large part of the Udinese plain arranging themselves along a line that goes from the Natisone Valleys to Latisana. Subsequently, the system moves south-east, affecting the Isonzo area, the lagoon and the Karst.

During the night new storm cells are generated over the Upper Adriatic and Veneto and are transported by the winds at high altitude towards the region, insisting particularly on the lower Udinese plain, Isonzo, coast and Karst although with lower intensities than those of the previous evening.

Rain and wind.

As of 6pm, the highest rainfall amounts measured in one hour in the region were: 54 mm in Aviano (TdR return time of 30 years), 54 mm in San Pelagio di DuinoAurisina (TdR 10-15 years), 52 mm in Osoppo (TdR 5-10 years), 50 mm in Fossalon (TdR 5-10 years), 46 mm in Udine (TdR 2-5 years), 45 mm in Palmanova (TdR 2-5 years). In the last 12 hours recorded approximately 15,000 lightning strikes. The maximum wind gusts are 90 km/h in Fagagna and Pradamano, 76 km/ha Trieste, 72 km/ha Udine, 67 km/ha Grado.

Ground effects.

Since the late afternoon of yesterday 10 June, following intense localized rainfall, there have been widespread flooding of streets and basements in the municipalities of Maniago, Nimis, Fanna, Aviano, Sequals, S. Daniele del Friuli, Maniago, Rive d’Arcano, Polcenigo, Monreale Valcellina, Rivignano Teor, Ronchis, Pradamano, Torviscosa, Porpetto, Latisana, Sagrado, Cervignano, San Vito at Torre and Grado.

I am fallen trees in the municipalities of Fagagna, Martignacco, Moruzzo and Udine; in Grado a collapsed scaffolding and in Moruzzo we provided generator support to a stable. They were recorded rock falls and landslides in Sequals along the SR 552 and the old road to Solimbergo. The ford on the Cornappo in Nimis and an underpass in Sagrado and Ronchi dei Legionari were closed due to flooding.

The interventions.

I am 250 urgent technical rescue interventionsattributable to bad weather, carried out by the Friuli Venezia Giulia firefighters in the last 24 hours; 134 in the territory of the Udine command, 60 in the Trieste command, 50 in Pordenone and 6 in Gorizia. Flooding, fallen trees, etc. firefighters were involved throughout yesterday and into the night. At the moment the situation has returned to normal in almost all commands in the region, only the Udine command is still waiting for a forty traceable calls in bad weather.

As regards Civil Protection, they have been activated 143 volunteers with 24 vehicles for the management of problems resulting from the weather event and the monitoring of the territory.

Evolution.

The day will continue in the name of atmospheric instability. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected on several occasions throughout the day, alternating with long breaks without rain, which will be more likely especially in the afternoon and evening. They will still be possible locally stronger thunderstormsbut with a lower probability than yesterday.
