The strong wave of bad weather that hit did not spare the area of Alto Ferrarese and Cento, which however was able to sleep more peacefully thanks to the ‘work’ of the Cavo Napoleonico, a work which has saved the area from flooding many times of the Rhine. The river has risen this time too. 48 hours of rain upstream were enough to start talking about danger again. Alarms that are becoming more and more frequent and if on the one hand there are the so-called ‘water bombs’, on the other there are now many people who are wondering whether it is not appropriate to intervene by bringing the bottom of the Rhine lower. In a scenario which would have seen the river level rise from Sunday evening, the Cavo Napoleonico was opened around 4am yesterday morning, taking away the excess water and allowing a better flow of the flood which was expected for late yesterday morning. And if the surrounding rivers have reached beyond the orange and red threshold, the Rhine has seen the yellow level exceeded but without reaching the upper step. The level reached 5.5 meters at 11 am and then reached a maximum of 6.44 meters at 6 pm and caused the curve to turn downwards, with the cable therefore contributing to creating a situation of tranquility even though there was the presence of many branches and trunks that were passing between the two Centi bridges in the late afternoon. The situation was monitored all the time, but after the flood there were no further peaks upstream.

“The situation is monitored and within the norm – said Mayor Edoardo Accorsi yesterday – the hydrometric level of Cento at 4pm was 6.30 metres, i.e. above the yellow threshold but below the orange alert threshold of 7 metres. All monitoring activities are in progress camp and during the night a civil protection team was also activated to provide support to the Modenese. This is an opportunity to thank them for what they do.”

On this night of emergency, in fact, the civil protection group of the Alpini group of Cento went to help areas in crisis with a team that left for the Modena area, then returned in the morning and from the afternoon until today they have kept a team specialized in emergency interventions on the embankments starting promptly, as well as teams in the area until the storm phenomena end.
