EUROPEAN VOTE, COLDIRETTI CUNEO: THE MANIFESTO FOR AGRICULTURE
Among the priorities to be addressed, fair income for farmers, bureaucracy, transparency on labels, wildlife. The future of food and stability depends on the CAP
While awaiting the electoral results and the formation of the new institutions of the European Union, Coldiretti has developed a Manifesto on the measures it requests from the new leaders in Brussels. “The Europe we want” is the title of the document aimed at relaunching agriculture, enhancing the role of producers, defending the quality and transparency of food, supporting farmers’ income.
“We hope for a policy committed to the protection and valorisation of agri-food, a strategic sector of the economy at all levels, from our province to Europe. The agri-food sector will only be able to grow by guaranteeing competitiveness to agricultural businesses, i.e. by limiting damage from wildlife to a minimum, focusing on supply chains that bring fair income to farmers, eliminating the bureaucracy and critical issues of tenders for new investments, and guaranteeing transparency on the label. ” claims Enrico Nada, President of Coldiretti Cuneo.
The Coldiretti Manifesto starts from the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy), “a primarily agricultural and not environmental instrument” on which the future of food and consequently stability, peace and democracy depends.
“Enough with ‘ideo-ecological’ policies, no more strategies written against agriculture, but investments to be increased to encourage generational change and ensure the food autonomy of European citizens” states Fabiano Porcu, Director of Coldiretti Cuneo, who underlines the importance of recognizing the role of farmers as custodians of ecosystems and biodiversity.
A key issue according to Coldiretti Cuneo is the recognition of a fair income for farmers, for which the CAP will have to incentivize a model that favors supply chain agreements so that the producer link in the value chain is not disadvantaged.
Another fundamental and central point in the action that Coldiretti has been carrying out for weeks is the obligation to indicate origin on the label for all foods and the abolition of the rule of the Customs Code on the last transformation which allows the Italianisation of foreign agri-food products which they have undergone minimal processing on national territory.
The 360-degree defense of food includes the request to stop imports that do not comply with European and Italian standards, creating unfair competition for our producers: it is essential, according to Coldiretti, to introduce the principle of reciprocity in trade.
Coldiretti’s defense of food is also based on saying no to Nutriscore, the nutritional label that deceives consumers and damages quality products, and to food made in laboratories. Thanks to Coldiretti and its great mobilization with the collection of two million signatures, the issue of artificial food products has become public knowledge and Italy has passed a law prohibiting the production, transformation and import of synthetic foods, which has become a model. Twelve European Union countries, in fact, have signed a document that provides for a moratorium on cell-based food and on the other side of the ocean Florida and Alabama have passed legislation similar to the Italian one.
Coldiretti calls for the simplification of rural development rules and the strengthening of investments in research (starting with TEAs) and training. The promotion of innovation must become, for Coldiretti, a driver of the European Union. Among the proposals are a campaign to support precision agriculture, European investments in artificial intelligence systems to overcome delays on this front managed by the tech giants of the United States and China.
Another chapter is that of risk management which – underlines Coldiretti Cuneo – must aim for greater flexibility and speed in ascertaining damages and in reconstructing the advance capital to ensure the continuity of the company.
Without forgetting the containment of wildlife necessary to protect farmers’ income.
And last, certainly not least because it could represent the real turning point, the cancellation of the bureaucracy which today – reports Coldiretti Cuneo – forces farmers to produce more paper than food.
