A completely new ‘Marconi’. High school dedicated to mobility, sustainability and inclusiveness

A project based on inclusiveness, mobility and sustainability. These are the three pillars designed around the project of the new Marconi scientific high school in Carrara illustrated yesterday at Palazzo Ducale in Massa in a well-attended conference in the presence of some students and teachers of the current scientific high school, hosted for some years in via Campo d’Appio in Avenza together with the Technical Institute. The president of the Province Gianni Lorenzetti, the principal of ‘Marconi’ Stefania Figaia, the urban planning councilor of the Municipality of Carrara Moreno Lorenzini and some technicians from Rtp Sintel Engineering, winner of the tender, illustrated the project. An executive demolition and reconstruction project which, overall, will cost just over 15 million euros and will require, once the bulldozers have started, at least a couple of years to complete.

“In these days I will contact the Ministry – explained Lorenzetti to the young people in the room – and I will send all the necessary documentation to obtain the financing. The only way to obtain the funds is to present a complete project, as in this case. For a few years now many schools in the area have begun to show the signs of time and the ‘Marconi’ is just one of the schools that are affected by demolition and reconstruction works in this period, we also think for example of the works at the Tacca’ or the Zaccagna work done in concert with the school, to understand the needs, the Municipality of Carrara and the technicians”.

The school, adapted in volumes and with an important green area, will also have movable walls for classrooms that will allow ‘multifocal’ teaching as happens for example in Scandinavian countries, as explained by principal Figaia, ready to welcome a total of 625 students to which to add the teachers and staff. “As an engineer I say that these buildings, I am referring to the old Marconi – added councilor Lorenzini – were not designed for an infinite duration. Sometimes it is better to demolish and rebuild and this is an example of this. It is a big step this project”.

The new school will give great space to flexibility and, as mentioned, modularity, with areas that are always well lit in continuity with the surrounding environment. The overall structure, given the reduction envisaged by the project, in compliance with the new legal regulations, will go from the current five to three buildings.
