The initiative, aimed at collecting food for needy families in the region, involved 8709 pupils: 1343 from nursery school, 3207 from primary school, 1998 from middle school and 2162 from high school.

The president of the Valle d’Aosta Food Bank, Marinella Ciarlo, expressed great satisfaction with the outcome of the project: “The generosity shown by the pupils and their families was touching. Every year, DONACIBO reminds us how important the contribution of each to support those in difficulty.”

The project was not limited to collecting food, but also had a strong educational value. Some volunteers, at the request of the teachers, held lessons in the various classes to explain the activity of the Food Bank network in Italy and in the Aosta Valley. “We wanted to raise students’ awareness of important issues such as sharing, giving, food waste and the circular economy,” said Ciarlo.

  • Nursery and primary schools: The focus was on the values of sharing and giving. “It is essential that children understand the importance of helping others from an early age,” underlined one of the teachers involved.

  • Middle School: The students learned how food waste occurs mainly in our homes and the importance of product expiration dates. They were also informed about good and bad molds. “It was surprising to see how much interest the kids showed in these topics,” commented one of the volunteers.

  • High school: The topic of the circular economy has highlighted how the regeneration of apparently lifeless elements is now a production practice of many Italian companies. “Our students were able to see how the principles of the circular economy can be applied concretely,” said one teacher.

A Great Result of Solidarity

The final result of the collection was extraordinary: 6487 kg of long-life foodstuffs were donated. “This result confirms once again the great generosity of the Aosta Valley community,” said Marinella Ciarlo. “In recent years, support for the Food Bank has never been lacking, and for this I want to thank all those who participated and were involved in this food collection.”

DONACIBO represents the second fundamental event of the Food Bank’s activity, together with the Food Collection at the end of November. “These events are crucial to our work,” concluded Ciarlo, “and the community’s positive response gives us the strength to continue supporting families in difficulty.”

The success of DONACIBO 2024 not only underlines the generosity of the Aosta Valley community, but also the importance of educating the new generations about solidarity and sustainability.
