Taranto, Iacovone stadium fire: there are two suspects

Vincenzo Piccolo and Paolo Fornaro, officials of the public works department of the Municipality of Taranto, have been registered in the register of suspects for complicity in negligent fire. The investigation concerns the fire that broke out at the Iacovone stadium after the derby between Taranto and Foggia on 3 September 2023.

Francesca Colaci, public prosecutor of the Taranto Prosecutor’s Office, has ordered a technical investigation to establish the causes of the fire and evaluate the impact of the storage of rolls for the athletics track under the Curva Sud. The investigations are conducted by investigators from the Taranto Police State of the Taranto Police Headquarters.

Colaci’s objective is to clarify the role of the large packed packages in the worsening of the fire, which forced the closure of the stadium for over a month. On the evening of the fire, the Fire Brigade managed to put out the flames, which however resumed independently the following morning.

It should be remembered that two Foggia fans were arrested and will be tried in September 2024, accused of being the material authors of the fire. Their responsibilities were ascertained thanks to investigations by the Digos of Taranto and Foggia, which analyzed the footage from the stadium cameras and some wiretaps.
