Sassari honors its Presidents: Monument to Segni and Cossiga inaugurated

On the Sardinian morning, characterized by a light breeze and clear skies, Sassari paid homage to two of its most illustrious figures, Antonio Segni and Francesco Cossiga. These men, who not only held the office of President of the Italian Republic but also shared deep roots with this land, were celebrated through the inauguration of a monument in the public gardens overlooking Viale Enrico Berliguer.

The event saw the participation of illustrious personalities, including Nanni Campus, mayor of Sassari, Mario Segni, son of Antonio Segni, and Federico Soro, director of the Sculpture School of the “Sironi” Academy of Fine Arts, who coordinated the monument project.

The monumentalized area, now embellished with bronze busts of the two former presidents, is the result of meticulous and thoughtful work, curated by the “Sironi” Academy of Fine Arts. This installation is not only an aesthetic tribute but also represents a symbolic reminder of the roots and values that Segni and Cossiga have always carried with them, first and foremost the love for their land, Sardinia.

Mario Segni, in his speech, underlined the profound love that his father had for this island, reiterating how, from the moment of his election, he expressed the hope of representing Sardinia with dignity. He also recalled the close friendship that bound his family to Francesco Cossiga, highlighting how fate played its cards on him by making both presidents of the Republic, an almost fictional exemplification of their intertwined careers.

The monument is much more than a celebration of successful political careers; it is a reminder for the new generations. It tells of two men who, despite their ascension to the honors of national politics, never forgot their origins and continued to nurture an unconditional love for their land of origin. This lesson of integrity and dedication to the homeland is a vital message especially in these times when politics seems increasingly distant from the real needs of citizens.

The intertwining of personal memories and political history made the ceremony a moment of strong emotional impact, which strengthened the sense of community and belonging among the people of Sassari. The presence of the busts in the heart of the city serves as a constant reminder of the indissoluble bond between Sassari and its most revered sons, reminding everyone of the importance of the values of loyalty and service towards one’s country.

In this era of rapid change and global challenges, figures like Segni and Cossiga still inspire, perennial symbols of a past that continues to dialogue with the present, guiding new generations towards a future in which, hopefully, integrity and love for one’s place of origin remain essential values in politics and daily life. With this tribute, Sassari not only honors its heroes, but also renews a collective commitment towards the ideals of social and cultural responsibility that they represented.
