Another day of summits at the Region in an attempt to avert the worsening of the waste emergency in the over 200 municipalities that deliver waste to the Sicula Trasporti landfill in the Coda Volpe district of Lentini.

The new alarm broke out after the letter with which the judicial administrators of the landfill communicated the impossibility of continuing the treatment of waste with the TMB plant due to the lack of storage space for the eco-bales.

“In consideration of this and the consequent saturation of the spaces available for the storage of filmed bales of Eer 191212 waste, the undersigned company will not be able to materially continue the treatment activity, and therefore reception, beyond 02 July 2024, reserving the right to limit the deliveries from 1 July if the safety conditions of the delivery area require it.

An inspection visit is urgently requested in order to verify what has been stated by the territorial control bodies: Arpa Sicilia, Arpa Uos Attività produttive Catania, provincial command of the Fire Brigade and Asp of Catania”.

The judicial administrators of the plant have announced that, following the orders issued in recent days by the President of the Region, in his capacity as Extraordinary Commissioner for the waste emergency, only two of the four companies that manage the landfills identified in the orders, Impianti Srr Ato 4 of Caltanissetta and Catanzaro Costruzioni, have communicated their willingness to transfer and the start of the approval procedures.

The meeting yesterday was attended by the regional councilors for Energy, Roberto Di Mauro, and for Territory, Elena Pagana, the chief of staff of Palazzo d’Orleans Salvatore Sammartano, the general managers of the regional departments of Civil Protection Salvo Cocina, of the Environment Patrizia Valenti, of Water and Waste Arturo Vallone, of Arpa Sicilia Vincenzo Infantino, as well as Domenico Baratta of the specialized technical commission for the release of regional environmental authorizations and the technical director of Sicula Trasporti, Marco Morabito.

In an interview given a few days ago to the Giornale di Sicilia, President Schifani did not hide his anger and disappointment at how the TMB affair in Lentini was handled by the two councilors, the one at Waste, Roberto Di Mauro, and the one to the environment Elena Pagana.

Both could be replaced in the upcoming government cabinet reshuffle, despite the MPA blocking in defense of Di Mauro and party leader Raffaele Lombardo intervening to defend him.

“What happened with the landfill and the TMB plant in Lentini is truly unfortunate.

And it rained on my table without anyone ever informing me beforehand.”

Schifani had not been tender even with officials and managers.

“Beyond political considerations, in February, when the contracts expire, I do not intend to renew many of the top ranks of the bureaucracy, making room for new and willing generations of managers”.

Yesterday Schifani took advantage of the emergency situation, a consequence of the poor management of the matter by the Region, to relaunch the choice of building the two waste-to-energy plants.

“All the offices of the Region have been mobilized to identify immediate solutions to the problems raised by the administrators of Sicula Trasporti, to whom we extend our thanks for their responsible and deeply institutional dialogue.

Even more, the Lentini affair confirms the strategic importance of the construction of the two waste-to-energy plants already financed by the Development and Cohesion Fund, whose operation will sweep away decades of erroneous waste policies, the result of a lack of courage in strategic choices that should have been made previously”

Meanwhile, beyond the controversies and statements of principle, the 200 municipalities that have nowhere to dispose of their waste are waiting for solutions capable of averting yet another health and hygiene emergency.
