It’s the day of truth: the highly contested San Lazzaro roundabout, which has created so many traffic jams and controversies since its construction, closes today for about a month on an experimental basis. The change to the road system will allow Tps Pro, the company appointed by the Municipality to draw up the urban sustainable mobility plan, to «position sensors and evaluate the impact that these changes will have on traffic. An alternative solution to the current one will be tested. The partial ban on the roundabout will be signaled through special barriers”, explains the Municipality.

The reactions

The reactions, even before the fateful day, were immediate: pros and cons. «Although the idea of finding a solution to the traffic problem at the Cemetery roundabout is appreciable, the solution that emerges with the experimentation identified by the Municipality seems to aggravate the problem and not solve it» claims the FdI group leader, Laura Allegrini. «Failure to turn left at the entrance to Villanova will penalize the commercial activities present and will force residents to go as far as Via della Palazzina to reach home. For a long time there has been talk of channeling the traffic from the northern quadrant of the city entering on Cassia and exiting via Garbini, via dell’Industria and its extension from Poggino to the former “Oasi” area foreseen in the Pnrr. Currently these conditions do not exist because there is no extension and therefore this “hybrid” solution will make traffic worse. The proposed solution will pour all the traffic into the next roundabout (Ipercoop) with even more serious problems.”

Allegrini asks to «re-evaluate this hypothesis and to immediately convene the third commission to inform us in detail about the results provided by the technicians in charge of the urban sustainable mobility plan».

Of the opposite opinion, and in line with the choice of the Municipality, is the activist Giovanni Faperdue, who for 214 days had protested at the roundabout complete with a sign. «All the motorists agreed with me on the need to modify that “slip knot” in city traffic. Now that the municipal administration has announced the temporary changes to the road system, for the collection of traffic data, which is the first useful and necessary step for the study of the changes to be made, to make it smooth and modern, here is an outcry that It leaves me perplexed. It is true that the new road system will involve some sacrifices, but all citizens should accept it, thinking about the benefits that a modified and smoother roundabout will bring to everyday traffic. I remind everyone that that roundabout was built incorrectly, without accurate studies that would have discouraged its construction.”
