the solution of the ASP of Messina

“To reduce long waiting lists, work and study groups created by the ASP of Messina has identified various solutions: it is now essential to immediately implement a reorganization of shifts which provides for the opening of health facilities and therefore of hospitals and clinics 7 days a week, from 8am to midnight thanks to a loan of approximately 3 million euros for these first 100 days. There will be 185 healthcare services that have priority and will be carried out in the first few days. This extension of service hours will allow us to accommodate a greater number of patients, reducing waiting times. At the same time, it is crucial to plan for the hiring of new medical staff and to guarantee an efficient and quality service. Only with an increase in human resources and optimized shift management will it be possible to effectively respond to the needs of the population and improve access to care”. This was stated by the Extraordinary Commissioner of the ASP of Messina Giuseppe Cucci who this morning together with the health director Lia Murè organized a conference at Palazzo Geraci to illustrate the planning and strategies to reduce waiting lists in city clinics and hospitals in the Province of Asp.

“It’s time to say enough to exhausting waiting lists – continues Cucci-which paralyze our system. We can no longer tolerate citizens having to wait months, if not years, to obtain essential services. We must immediately use radical and innovative solutions, increase staff, improve efficiency and use technology to our advantage while respecting current regulations and budgets. Every day of delay is an affront to people’s dignity. There is no time to waste: immediate action is the only acceptable response.” “It was necessary – Cucci explained – carefully analyze existing processes and identify inefficiencies that slow down workflow. A working group has therefore been created to study solutions for the revision of operating procedures that can contribute to improving the management of time and resources. Involving staff in continuous training and promoting collaboration between different organizational levels are essential steps to create a more effective and resilient system”.

“This approach identified – explains Murè – will increase the availability of appointments and procedures, allowing more patients to be treated in shorter times. However, it is essential to ensure that medical and healthcare staff are not overworked by maintaining sustainable and balanced shifts. For this reason we are carrying out procedures for new hires.” “Finally, – concludes Murè – reducing waiting lists in the healthcare sector is a complex challenge, but it was a moral obligation for us. In the long term, to ensure that waiting lists do not accumulate further, we will put a plan focusing above all on hospitalizations and visits, considering the appropriateness of the services and collaborating more carefully with family doctors. There is no need to book, those who are already booked, we are talking about 15,000 people, will be called directly by the ASP in these 100 days”.
