The ASP of Trapani offers women a new long-lasting contraceptive method: the hormonal contraceptive implant. The service is available at the Family Counseling Center in Erice, within the Mother and Child Department, and will soon be extended to all company counseling centers.
The contraceptive implant is a small flexible device about 2 centimeters in length that is inserted under the skin on the upper non-dominant arm. It releases a hormone (progestin) that inhibits ovulation and makes it difficult for the egg to fertilize. The contraceptive effect lasts up to three years.

- Reversibility: The contraceptive implant can be removed at any time by a qualified doctor. Fertility returns to normal within a short time of removal.

- Durability: The contraceptive implant lasts up to three years, which means it does not need to be replaced frequently.
- No estrogenic side effects: The contraceptive implant does not contain estrogen, so it does not have the side effects associated with these hormones, such as headache, nausea or increased breast sensitivity.
