On Sunday 14 April 2024, Messina State Police personnel took a 31-year-old Tunisian smuggler to the CPR (Permanence Center for Repatriation) in Potenza.
The detention, arranged by the Immigration Office of the Messina Police Headquarters, was adopted against the Tunisian by the Messina Police Commissioner Annino Gargano, pending the decisions by the offices responsible for evaluating his asylum application.
In particular, the foreigner – sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment and a fine of 320,000 euros for aiding and abetting illegal immigration, with perpetual disqualification from public offices and legal disqualification during the sentence – had been released from prison on the same day on Sunday, after having served the sentence, during which he had formalized a request for asylum for fear of suffering persecution in his country of origin.
The measure of detention at the aforementioned CPR adopted by the Police Commissioner of Messina was made necessary for the needs of social defense and protection of the entire community, given the dangerousness of the same deduced from the serious crime for which he was responsible, as well as from the danger of leak.
It should be noted that, for the moment, it has not been possible to arrange for his immediate repatriation as the validity of the asylum application will have to be assessed by the competent bodies.
