Confesercenti and Confcommercio ask for a new meeting with the Prefect. Fear of the escalation of incidents that undermine safety.

Concern is growing over the escalation of news episodes that are repeated in the Porcinai gardens area. Confcommercio and Confesercenti have written to the Prefect Maddalena De Luca and the mayor Alessandro Ghinelli to ask for a new meeting and evaluate how to stem an increasingly worrying situation.

“For some weeks” declare the director of Confesercenti Arezzo Valeria Alvisi and the deputy director of Confcommercio for the provinces of Florence-Arezzo Catiuscia Fei “we have collected reports from traders in the Porcinai gardens area, where for some time there has been widespread perception of insecurity and poor decorum. There has been a direct discussion with the institutions regarding the problems of the area and we expect that the start of the redevelopment works will represent a positive turning point. In the meantime, however, we are recording a series of episodes that bring to light bad visits to the gardens, confirming the fears previously reported. From knife attacks to bottle blowing and saloon scenes as described in local news, we have recorded an escalation of events that worry those who work in nearby businesses on a daily basis. The fear is also for customers: we don’t want repeated episodes of violence to contribute to driving citizens away from frequenting and walking in the Porcinai gardens”.
Confcommercio and Confesercenti have therefore written to the Prefect and the Mayor to ask that in the area of the Porcinai gardens the surveillance of the police forces be more intensified and public lighting be strengthened, even on a temporary basis. Aware that the redevelopment times of the area will not be short, the trade associations are asking for a new discussion on the situation. “There is a need” conclude Fei and Alvisi “to sit down at a table again to analyze the problems. Unfortunately, the episodes of violence occurred not only at night, but even in broad daylight and even on a quiet Sunday during the Antiques Fair, when the city was invaded by tourists. In addition to security, there is also the image of the city at risk.”
