Foligno, 17 April 2024 – Hundreds of members of the eight Umbrian sections of the Italian Alpine Club and other hiking and environmental associations participated last Sunday in the Stazzi car park in Assisi (Mount Subasio) in the public demonstration to say “NO” to the free travel of motor vehicles on the paths and forest roads of Umbria.

During the initiative, the clear opposition to the regional law which since last December has effectively opened traffic on mountain roads was reiterated and the request to the Umbria Region to review its contents was renewed.

The initiative was organized by the Cai-Umbria regional group together with 27 other associations. The opportunity for this “civil and peaceful” protest was offered by the second day of “Cammini Aperti” 2024 which, promoted by the Umbria Region and Sviluppumbria, last Sunday involved one of the sections of the Francesco del Monte Siubasio route. The Cai members were led by the new president of the Cai-Umbria regional group, Maria Luisa Spantini, who was elected last Saturday 13 April, taking over from Gian Luca Angeli.

Underlined during the event was the “blatant contradiction” of the Umbria Region which, as the leader of slow tourism, promoted a valuable initiative such as ‘Open Cammini’, but which at the same time approved a change to regional legislation which is harmful to the environment and slow tourism.

The participants in the protest received support for their reasons from the councilor of the Municipality of Narni, Luca Tramini and from the regional councilor Stefano Pastorelli, both present at the initiative./
