Sophie-Anne Herin’s exhibition tells of a twilight and mysterious Aosta Valley

At the Gamba Castle in Châtillon, home of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the exhibition “Entre chien et loup” by Sophie-Anne Herin has opened to the public.

The ancient French expression chosen to give the exhibition its name, which can be translated into Italian as “at nightfall”, embodies the meaning of the project: telling that particular moment of the day characterized by the transition from light to darkness. It is the time of twilight during which it is not possible to distinguish a dog from a wolf, as the French poet Jean-Antoine Baïf wrote in the 16th century. It is the moment that heralds the arrival of the night and with it the arrival of fears, personal and primitive ones. And the twilight described by Sophie-Anne Herin is that of the envers, the Aosta Valley side occupied mainly by woods and characterized by the scarcity of hours of light in the winter months.

The exhibition was created in synergy with the regional historical and artistic heritage structure. The manager Viviana Maria Vallet explains: «The visual rendering of the Aosta Valley is completely peculiar, technically conducted by underexposing the images during the photographic shooting phase, digital and analogue, with the aim of creating twilight images. It is the desire to surround each work with an aura of mystery that animates the entire exhibition and not an attempt to define each photographed entity.”

The exhibition develops within the three floors dedicated to the temporary exhibitions of the Gamba Castle in a journey that starts from the earth and then goes beyond the borders of the mountains and arrives first at the sky and finally at the dream. It will be open to visitors until June 16th.
