Goodbye to Donald Sutherland. The Hollywood star who had starred in so many legendary films, from The Dirty Dozen to MASHfrom Animal House to Common peoplefrom Pride and Prejudice to Hunger Games, died today in Miami after a long illness. He was 88 years old. The news was announced by his son Kiefer Sutherland, also an actor and star of the TV series 24, who writes on Instagram: «He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more. Hollywood had recognized its great value with the honorary Oscar in 2017. In addition to Kiefer, Donald Sutherland was also the father of Roeg Sutherland, a veteran of a famous talent agency, CAA Media Finance.

In his long career, Donald Sutherland has played characters such as the cold amateur murder detective John Klute, alongside Jane Fonda, in A call girl for Inspector Klute; was Hawkeye Pierce in MASH, set during the Korean War. One of his first roles was that of the sadistic fascist in Twentieth century by Bernardo Bertolucci from 1976, protagonist of a very famous scene of violence. Also in Italy, she had acted in Casanova by Fellini, a film he was particularly fond of.

Born on 17 July 1935 in Saint John, Canada, Donald Sutherland has participated in around 200 projects, including films and TV series, in over 60 years of career, from participation in episodes of 1960s series such as Suspense, The Avengers, Court Martial And The Odd Man. The big break at the cinema came with Robert Aldrich’s star-studded 1967 film, The Dirty Dozen, in which he plays Vernon Pinkley alongside Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, George Kennedy, Telly Savalas and others. An American war film that will go down in history.
